The FDA will be changing nutrition fact labels to adjust that people tend to eat more. On the plus side this will make people realize that what they consume actually has higher calories/fat/carbs/etc. Critics of the label think on the down side, people will think that its ok to eat more. The conundrum.
I suppose in the past people would justify to themselves "it says a serving is only 10 calories....."

From the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy news:
The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) said it would spend money on “a heroin and prescription opioid training curriculum will be developed and used to prepare rural and municipal officers and first responders who are inexperienced responding to heroin and prescription opioid-related incidents."
"A recent report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found that four out of five recent heroin initiates had previously used prescription pain relievers non-medically."
Also "compounded or repackaged drugs that have been stored in 3 mL and 5 mL syringes manufactured by Becton-Dickinson (BD)...may lose potency over a period of time due to a possible interaction with the rubber stopper in the syringe, according to an FDA safety notice."

Both Rite Aid and Walgreens opted to settle in California courts over 2014 allegations that their pharmacists did not counsel customers. CVS was mentioned because of alleged wrong doing in 2013.
Walgreens has agreed to pay $502,200 to settle charges that some of its pharmacists in California failed to provide patient consultations required by law.
“Pharmacist consultations prevent drug errors and ensure that patients have the right prescription for their condition,” San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis said. “Without these checks and balances, dire consequences could result.”

Rite Aid did not admit any guilt. However, as terms of the settlement, the chain agreed to implement an internal compliance program, and pay investigative costs of $78,250 and civil penalties totaling $420,000.

I hate reading about small studies. Here is the exercise news from the peer reviewed literature.....
"Among athletes, the opinion is widely held that ice baths shorten recovery time after workouts. But an international research team dispel this myth: according to scientists from Australia, Norway and New Zealand, the opposite is the case: ice baths reduce the success of strength training, they write in the "Journal of Physiology".
The researchers asked 21 physically active men to undertake strength training two days a week for 12 weeks. After workout, half of them spent 10 minutes in an ice bath at 10 degrees Celsius, while the others were assigned to a warm-down on an exercise bike. After the 12-week period, strength and muscle mass increases were higher in those who had an active warm-down than those who had endured an ice bath.
In a second trial, muscle biopsies were taken from men who had either spent time in an ice bath or had an active warm-down after performing single-leg strength exercises. In the ice bath group, the biopsies showed that the activity of satellite cells and the signalling pathways, which are required for building bigger and stronger muscles, were "blunted" up to two days. It is not yet clear why ice baths have this effect, but it could be caused by a reduction of muscle blood flow. For the time being, the study authors therefore recommend athletes to steer clear of ice baths - at least after strength training."

To the women who find reproduction dull, the FDA has a pill for you. The only condition is you cannot drink ETOH while on it. Here is an important part of the FDA press release.
Addyi can cause severely low blood pressure (hypotension) and loss of consciousness (syncope). These risks are increased and more severe when patients drink alcohol or take Addyi with certain medicines (known as moderate or strong CYP3A4 inhibitors) that interfere with the breakdown of Addyi in the body. Because of the alcohol interaction, the use of alcohol is contraindicated while taking Addyi. Health care professionals must assess the likelihood of the patient reliably abstaining from alcohol before prescribing Addyi.

Antibodies developed against MERS
APA Jul 30, 2015 No rating
Swiss researchers have developed antibodies against the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), which has been spreading since 2012 in the Middle East and, more recently, also in South Korea. The study was published in "PNAS".
A team of researchers led by Antonio Lanzavecchia from the Universita della Svizzera Italiana (USI) in Bellinzona, indicated that they needed four months to isolate, test and subsequently produce large quantities of the MERS antibody. The source was the blood of the first person who had developed MERS.
The researchers believe that - as soon as a producer has been found - effective therapies can be rapidly developed. Mice have already successfully been cured of the infection. The antibodies were effective against several viral strains. Further clinical development is planned.
To date, 1,300 people have contracted MERS, and about 500 have died. "An antibody could have limited this epidemic", said Lanzavecchia. Most infections are transmitted through family members and hospitals. "With the help of antibodies, the patients could have been cured and contact persons could have undergone postexposure prophylaxis", he said.

Blog reaction to PA PR from a while back:
So all RPHs in PA and the rest of the 3rd US district of appellate courts (also including NJ, USVI and DE) are now health care providers under this PA decision. What about the rest of the country and outlying territories?
What about the first district of ME, NH, MA,PR and RI? the 2nd of NY, VT, CT? The fourth of MD, VA, WV, NC, SC. The 5th of TX, LA, MS? 6th: TN, KY, OH, MI. 7th IN IL WI? 8: ND, SD, NE, MN, IA, MO, AR? 10 NM, CO, UT, WY, KS, OK? 11 FL AL GA? or the 9th of the remainder of the us?
< Source: http://www.uscourts.gov/uscourts/images/CircuitMap.pdf >
What does that mean? I must charge a reasonable fee to make copies of my confidential medical records based on my expenses. Yay. I already was charging a reasonable fee. I've seen RPhs give them away for free just because the parent asked for it while picking up a RX.
Must I charge a fee since paper and ink cost money or if I live in another regional district? Other jurisdictions don't have to agree to other decisioons if they don't want to (per a lawyer and pharmacy law professor). Granted if the court wants to agree they can use it to bolster their arguments. It's not a supreme court decision. It's facts like that which made law students tell me that pharmacy was so much easier because it was consistent.
Does that mean much else? Will this make private insurance companies, state or federal agencies consider paying for my drug knowledge? How about MTM? Will this allow me to write RXs for patients when they lack a RX, but are short of medicine? Will this allow me to fill pain relieving RXs without worrying about the DEA, board of pharmacy, police or a boss getting mad at me?

Prosthetic knee, vehicle of missing ND woman found in Idaho

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -
Authorities say the vehicle and a prosthetic knee of a North Dakota woman who went missing almost four years ago have been found in Idaho.
The Grand Forks County Sheriff's Office says the prosthetic knee belonging to Florence Dumontet was found Wednesday by hikers in Idaho. Shoshone County, Idaho authorities then launched a helicopter crew which spotted Dumontet's vehicle about 500 yards off Interstate 90.
The 82-year-old woman from Ardoch vanished while driving to Washington state in October 2011. She was last seen on a security camera at a gas station in Missoula, Montana.

Do you recall a sing "How much is that doggie in the window?" This is a perennial question. Does the politician change their stripes based on who donates or do people just give money if they think the same way?
Look how much manufacturers have
donated to California politicians. Some spent 100,000 or more on campaigns while others spent between 30,000 and 40,000. Most chose either lobbying or campaign donations
No information was printed in the article about how much anti-vaccine organizationa spent on lobbying.

"What surprise me is that their actuaries hadn't anticipated this more fully." Accounting Professor Forgione at UTSA. He hoped that prices would stabilize after 5 open enrollment cycles.
BCBS of TX cancelled the individual PPO b/c its expenditures exceeded its revenue by 400 MM [claims vs. premiums]. 367,000 people had that policy last year. Assurant will not be offering health insurance in 2016.

Including this under the weird/odd news. Also earlier saw a youtube video of a lady with porphyria who covered her body with tatoos to reduce her pain. The body art reminded me how sometimes people use makeup. Then I saw this story.

this article from forbes on july 28 had a reference to market volatility by focusing on a manufacturer. It highlighted how up until that point traders were pushing the stock down. Trading at $540.56, it was down by $5.71 or 1.05% in 24 hours. P/e ratios this year and forecasted for the next few years are:74.66, 66.48, 55.86, 45.73 is that a good investment?

From yahoo today it is at $582.47. With the drug approval it makes sense that investors would think it is worth more.

This is possibly not all unheard of news, but it was published in the journal Oncologist:149 Texans with cancer were consulted on their stress levels. One group went to a private hospital for care, the other a public hospital. While both groups were stressed, one group was poorer than the other.
The journal said this part is news for the poor people monetary distress was worse than "physical, family, and emotional distress." The study came to the conclusion, "physicians lack the tools to uncover financial distress."
As 4 is 1/2 of 8 there is a typo in the article, because the writer said the difference was more than 50%. http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/848903
The text reads:
In fact, a novel self-reported survey revealed that the average "intensity" of financial distress in the public hospital patients, measured in a 10-point scale, was more than twice that of private center patients (8 vs 4; P = .0003).

A magician on the adverse effects of eating fire from personal experience:
Even if you aren’t burned badly, you’ll still be poisoned a bit from the fuel. It’s harmful or fatal if swallowed—it says that right on the can that’s currently way far away from you. You’ll have a headache and your mouth will taste awful. You’ll have tastes, burps and smells you’ve never experienced before. Weirder tastes and smells than those bugnutty pickles you get at Indian restaurants. You’ll have little salty blisters oozing and breaking inside and outside of your mouth.

Memo to young teens. We know you think you are invincible, but please stay hydrated when you go to concerts.
Next, as the thirst mechanism in humans is delayed, please do not use illegal mind altering drugs. Ecstacy is one example which creates fevers as high as 108 degrees F. It kills people.
Death is not something you come back from. For those who some how do not die quickly, there is a much worse drawn put pain: organ damage. Organ donors are in short supply. There is also a chance of going into a coma. If you think student debt is high, look at a hospital bill.
Thus, save money and please skip the ecstacy. The life you save may be your own.
Source LA Times reporting 2 recent deaths of a 18 y/o & a 19 y/o. There were 5 recent dug confirmed rave deaths on the past 1.5 years. One more is being investigated. 14 died from 2006 to 2013.
